Scammell Lorries Ltd, of Watford was set up in 1922. Until 1933 the Company was devoted to heavy trucks but then launched its famous Mechanical Horse followed by the 'Rigid 8' which went into production in 1937. After the war they produced the Showtrac for the fairground industry, followed by the Explorer, Mountaineer and the Constructor the Highwayman appeared in the mid 50's, the plant closed in 1988.
